他的母親Anne Cocking（娘家姓Pickering）是一名生於達勒姆郡的教師；父親Stuart Pearce是個生於紐西蘭的空軍測試飛行員，但在皮爾斯9歲時就去世了[3][4][5]。在他三歲時，他家搬到了澳洲的吉朗，在那裡他母親經營著一家鹿場。他進入當地的私人學校 The Geelong College 就讀，並且是GSODA的成員。15到22歲之間，他是一名健美業餘選手。此外，他也參與過擊劍運動。
1980年代後期，他居住在維多利亞州的Box Hill North，並參與了澳洲電視劇《Neighbours》的演出。
個人生活

1997年3月，他與心理學家Kate Mestitz結婚[6]。他是吉朗澳式足球會（英語：Geelong Football Club）（Geelong Football Club，澳大利亞澳式足球聯盟的球隊之一）的長期支持者[7]。他個人不信上帝屬於無神論者，不過卻信仰「我們人類彼此都是相互關聯的」(we're all connected)信念[8]。
